Andrew Palmer
Andrew Palmer is a video artist whose work encompasses tradition and environment, and how people’s lives are submersed in both subjects. He uses film to document his subjects and then employs the editing process to deconstruct the narrative.
A Notion of Ocean Motion was filmed off the back of a fishing boat in the North Sea. A triptych video, it features three different angles of the horizon, each showing a fisherman immersed in his routine of trying to land a catch.
Palmer edited this piece to create a seemingly jointed panorama, only to eventually heave the viewer into a disjointed horizon. Hauling us onto the boat to feel the motion, hear the sea and creaking vessel, and most of all, experience the overwhelming sense of being completely surrounded by water and horizon, this piece is physically powerful. The artist wants the audience to experience a true representation of our coastal environment… sea sickness and all!
