Franny Armstrong

Director Franny Armstrong is the head of Spanner Films, a film company that have managed to turn the film industry on its head by doing things entirely their way, including making a documentary (Mc Libel) that was seen by 25 million people years before ever getting a TV or cinema release.

Workshop

During Margate Rocks 08, Armstrong will run an environmental activist filmmaking workshop in which she will discuss the practicalities of activist filmmaking and distribution, with a special emphasis on the uses of the web for filmmakers. She will also show clips from her new film Crude, a docu-drama about our individual responsibilities for global warming, several years in the making, and funded primarily by collaborators and supporters. If you want to know how to make accessible activist films that reach the general public; how to distribute them in a way you’re comfortable with; what opportunities the internet offers for getting the message out there yourself; and how you should you best use them, book now! The outcome of this workshop will be a real practical insight into getting the message of your film out online.

Screening and Talk

Franny Armstrong will also be showing her acclaimed film Drowned Out at the charming Carlton Cinema, Westgate, followed by a Q & A session. Shot over three years Drowned Out tells the true story of one family’s inspired stand against the destruction of their land, homes and culture. The 75 minute no-budget, no-electricity, no-Hindi documentary has been seen by more than 14 million people. Click here to buy tickets.

Franny Armstrong’s workshop and screening are supported by Canterbury Christ Church University
