Hannah Lees
Artist Hannah Lees makes work that questions the environments that we inhabit, often referencing the gaps between the natural world and the existence of modern, throw-away culture. “My sculptural works vary from the organic to the spiritual, in the sense that some seem to be trees or plants, and other works act as totems or hanging charms.”
Lees’s sculpture Intentional Clarity seems to be a tree but could equally be seen as a kind of sacred ‘place’. With its cable tie grass and bauble ‘fruits’ it appears to be other worldly. The inclusion of a real wooden branch encourages a sense of unfamiliarity whilst still seeming recognisable. Here, the artist has created something apparently organic but which is obviously constructed from man-made materials.
As Margate Rocks takes place during the Spring, Lees wanted to make something for Margate that was bearing fruits, implying ideas of reproduction and new life, or the potential for. “Margate is regenerating and so I am interested in making something full of hope and potential to mirror the changes in the town.”
