Margate Rocks encourages creative learning, aims to inspire and initiate an understanding of ecological awareness, and opens its doors to all.
The theme for this year’s Margate Rocks festival was largely inspired by the unique beauty of the Isle of Thanet coastline, on which lies Margate. The local landscape is providing our education programme with instant stimulus and natural materials – a rich resource for the planned series of workshops and talks.
Our education programme assists in the interpretation of the commissioned and exhibited artworks through a series of fun ecology and art themed activities. We aim to provide opportunities for people of all ages and we warmly invite you to come along and take part!
Events include artist-led family workshops using recycled materials, masterclasses in eco-friendly filmmaking, science experiments on the beach, a drama workshop for children, an INSET session for teachers, and discussions and debate with guest speakers in cafés. All of the workshops are free of charge and most involve just turning up and joining in. So, make a note of the date, time and place of the event you are interested in and we’ll see you there!
The programme kick started on 8th March with the ‘Drift’ filmmaking workshop, in which artists gained skills in order to create their own 5-minute shorts with an ecological theme. Their completed films will be screened at the Magnificent Revolution’s Cycling Cinema during the festival and on FourDocs, Channel Four’s broadband documentary channel.
It is the vision of Margate Rocks that through art and learning all participants of our education programme will become more aware of their environment, the stunning British landscape and the ecological issues that affect us here in Thanet and in other places on our precious planet.
Our partners include Channel 4’s FourDocs, Turner Contemporary and The Theatre Royal Margate.
