Want to know whats what on the beach in Margate? Here’s a chance to investigate the scientific unpinnings of the sand and the sea.
Join Dr Mark Miodownik in an investigation of chalk and other beach materials using microscopes. Watch the decomposition of chalk into lime using hydrochloric acid, then add dyes to the powder and watch the chalk’s reconstitution into pastels to make drawings on blackboards set up on the beach! You’ll learn other interesting facts too, like how to turn chalk into talcum powder and why it’s used by atheletes. This is a hands-on family activity.
This workshop is supported by The Materials Library
